Skilled, since 1945.

Sheet Metal Workers & Roofers Local 409 is the sheet metal and roofing local for mainland Nova Scotia, based in Halifax and affiliated with SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers. We train, dispatch and represent the journeypersons and apprentices behind the province's commercial and industrial builds.

What we stand for.

Sheet metal is one of the most diversified construction trades. Our members work across mainland Nova Scotia in HVAC installation, fabrication and service; architectural sheet metal and cladding; manufacturing; and metal and flat-roof systems, using hand tools, power tools and specialized equipment to fabricate, cut, bend and shape sheet metal and related materials.

From 1888 to today.

1888

SMWIA founded

The Sheet Metal Workers' International Association is chartered as one of North America's earliest organized building trades.

1945

Local 409 chartered

Sheet Metal Workers Local 409 is chartered on November 1, 1945, to represent tradespeople across mainland Nova Scotia.

2008

SMART forms

The SMWIA merges with the United Transportation Union to form SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, today representing more than 150,000 active and retired members.

2025

80 years strong

The local marks its 80th anniversary, having grown from 265 to roughly 375 members in recent years with a 100% employment rate, and adds architectural cladding to its jurisdiction in Nova Scotia.

Local 409 has been organized in mainland Nova Scotia since 1945. In recent years the local has grown from 265 to roughly 375 members while holding a 100% employment rate, and expanded its jurisdiction, most recently adding architectural cladding to the sheet metal, sheeter-decker and roofing trades it represents.
