The cards most Nova Scotia sites expect at mobilization, whatever the scope of work.
Effectively everyone on site
WHMIS
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is Canada's hazard-communication standard, aligned with the international GHS. It covers hazard labels, safety data sheets and the safe handling of controlled products. Training is required under federal and provincial law wherever hazardous products are used or stored, and most contractors ask to see a current card before you start.
Renewal · No fixed legal expiry, but sites commonly expect a refresh every 1 to 3 years, or whenever products and processes change.
Anyone working at height
Fall Protection
Harness systems, anchors, lanyards, guardrails and rescue planning. Nova Scotia's workplace safety regulations require fall protection training before working where a fall hazard exists, and sheet metal and roofing work on decks, roofs and mechanical penthouses puts members there constantly.
Renewal · Typically renewed every 3 years.
Designated first aiders, and a strong card for any member
First Aid & CPR
Standard or emergency level first aid with CPR-C or HCP. Nova Scotia's first aid regulations require certified first aiders on job sites, so crews that carry current cards keep themselves and the contractor covered.
Renewal · Certificates are generally valid for 3 years.
Committee members and worker representatives
Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
Foundations of site safety in this province: hazard recognition, rights and responsibilities under the Nova Scotia OHS Act, and the workplace committee system built on the internal responsibility system. Members who sit on OHS committees take the committee training; basic OHS awareness also shows up in many site orientations.

Tied to specific equipment or conditions. Whether you need them depends on the scope you are dispatched to.
Tank, vessel, duct and restricted-access work
Confined Space Entry
Entry procedures, atmosphere testing, permits, attendants and retrieval. Large duct and plenum work, tanks and mechanical spaces with restricted access all fall under confined-space rules before anyone goes in.

Anyone operating an elevated platform
Aerial Work Platform / Scissor Lift
Operator training for boom lifts and scissor lifts: controls, stability, fall protection from the basket and daily inspections. Sites ask for proof of operator competency before you take the controls.
Renewal · Typically renewed every 3 years.
Members rigging material lifts
Hoisting & Rigging
Sling selection, load charts, hitches and signalling. Flying duct sections, rooftop units and shop-fabricated assemblies safely is rigging work, and this ticket is how you prove you know it. Industrial, shipyard and hospital-project calls can add site-specific orientations on top; the hall will tell you what a call carries.

- Do I need WHMIS to work on a job site in Nova Scotia?
- Almost always, yes. WHMIS training is required under federal and provincial law wherever hazardous products are used or stored, which covers virtually every construction site. Most contractors ask for a current card at mobilization.

- Beyond the core tickets, industrial plants, shipyard work and major projects often carry their own site orientations and owner-specified training. The hall confirms the full list for each call before dispatch.
